Message from the President of the Queen’s Past Students’ Association – Jamaican Chapter
In 1953 the Synod of the Church in Jamaica in the Province of the West Indies passed a Resolution, the end result of which saw the Queen’s School opening her doors to admit her very first students on the morning of January 6, 1954. Over the past sixty (60) years the Queen’s School has nurtured, developed and maintained a tradition of excellence, one of which we as Past Students can be justly proud.
Students of the Queen’s School have excelled in all facets of life and this is testimony to the well rounded education which we received at the ‘Queen’s” where the development of the total person was emphasized. Co-curricular activities played an important role in the life of the Queen’s ladies and we were among one of the first Traditional High Schools to participate in the Jamaican Festival in the music, dance and culinary segments of the Festival, reaping great success. We have also produced National Representatives in the sporting disciplines of Track & Field Athletics, Field Hockey, Netball, and Badminton to name a few.
As we celebrate our 60th Anniversary this year, we give thanks to God for the vision of our Founding fathers and for all those persons who were an integral part of the process sixty (60) years ago. It is also the ideal time for us, as Past Students, to pause to reflect on the past, to give thanks for all the successes and to learn from the mistakes made as we forge ahead with plans to give back to the School, in an effort to ensure that the very high standards set are maintained and where possible surpassed in the coming years.
I therefore challenge all Past Students to make this our special intention during this our Anniversary year. I also commend all those who have continued to serve the School through their contribution as members of the Alumni Chapters, in Atlanta, Florida, Canada and the Friends of the Queen’s School in the United Kingdom. If I have omitted any Chapters, please let us know of them.
Heartiest congratulations to the Atlanta Chapter as you host your 60th Anniversary Function this evening. I wish for you a successful function as you share fellowship with each other and reminisce on the proverbial ‘good old days’ I know that the true spirit of the “Queen’s” will be in evidence. I also would like to extend a very special welcome to all our friends from all the other Schools in Jamaica who have come to lend their support.
The major project of the 60th Anniversary Committee is that of raising funds towards the building of the long overdue Auditorium for the School and I commend this project to everyone as we work together to see this project through. The ultimate goal is to raise sixty million dollars during the Anniversary year and although this might seem to be a formidable task, I feel confident that with determination and with all stakeholders working towards a common cause we can achieve whatever target we set ourselves.
Once again have a wonderful evening and as we all “Continue the Journey of Excellence as we Celebrate 60 Years, may we also continue to flourish in virtue and wisdom.
